Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Mitchell, MD is an Emergency Medicine Physician and Flight Surgeon with Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), 720th Operations Support Squadron – Operating Location Delta. He provides worldwide, deployed surgical and critical care in austere battlefields during combined, joint, and single service operations. He is responsible for pre-hospital evaluation, triage, resuscitation and transport care of Special Operations Forces (SOF) casualties during sensitive tactical operations. He is currently the Flight Commander of OL-D in Birmingham, AL.

Lt Col Mitchell received his commission in 2008 from Officer Training School, Maxwell AFB, AL and then served in the Oregon Air National Guard. He has participated in two humanitarian deployments to Guatemala and Bangladesh. He has three combat deployments to Afghanistan serving with a Rescue Squadron, a Critical Care Aeromedical Transport Team, and a Special Operations Surgical Team (SOST) in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE fighting the Global War on Terrorism. Prior to assuming his current assignment, he was the Officer in Charge of Human Performance/Resiliency at the 23d Special Tactics Squadron Hurlburt Field, FL. In 2014 Lt Col Mitchell was assigned to 720th Special Tactics Group as an Emergency Physician for the Special Operations Surgical Team at Birmingham, AL.
